Elite League: Defeat of Poles and performance of Wisła
The Polish U-20 national team played an Elite League match today. Our opponents were Portugal. The Polish national team was forced to concede their superiority, losing 1-2. The consolation goal for the Polish national team belonged to Wisła player Patryk Gogoł. Piotr Starzyński also played, coming on in the second half as a substitute for Gogoł.
The Portuguese advantage
The Portuguese started the match better. They held onto the ball more often, creating dangerous scoring opportunities. In the third minute, Ziółkowski was shown a yellow card for a tactical foul on one of the home players. It wasn't until fifteen minutes into the game that the Polish national team began to assert themselves, as evidenced by Patryk Gogół's attempt at a free kick, but his shot was too low, and the Portuguese defenders had no trouble gaining control. Portugal scored in the 23rd minute. Barroso masterfully controlled the ball and, without hesitation, fired it from outside the penalty area towards the goal guarded by Kikolski. Unfortunately for them, he did so effectively, and the ball found the back of the net. A few minutes later, it could have been 1-1, as Sochań had a perfect chance, but his attempt hit Fernandes' post. The final stages of the game were quite frantic, with a slight advantage for the hosts, who could have extended their lead if they had had a bit more luck.
Wislak's goal
The second half started in the worst possible way for Poland. Afonso Moreira found the back of the net in the first action. Poland had to wait less than ten minutes for a response. In the 56th minute, the referee called a foul on Jordan Majchrzak and awarded a penalty to Poland. This decision was puzzling, however, given that Stalmach had found the back of the net for the Portuguese just moments earlier, but the goal was disallowed. Wisła Kraków's Patryk Gogół took the penalty. The midfielder took a superb shot and scored. In the following minutes, the hosts demonstrated their technical prowess and game plan, creating more interesting scoring opportunities. In the 72nd minute, Patryk Gogół was removed from the field, replaced by another Wisła player, Piotr Starzyński. The Polish national team was forced to play with a man down for the final quarter of the match. This was all due to Jan Ziółkowski's second yellow card, and consequently a red card. The Pole had worked too hard with his elbow during the duel with his opponent, and the referee had no hesitation in issuing a red card.
Despite several interesting actions, the result of the match did not change and Portugal took all the points.
The next match between the Polish national team and the Polish national team will take place on October 11th. This time, the Poles will face the German national team.
