Blind Football: Wisła is the historic Polish Blind Football Champion
Wisła Blind Football Kraków made history by winning gold in the first season of the PGF Blind Football League! The final tournament, played last Saturday in Krakow, was a show of strength for the BF White Star, who sealed the title with a bang.
12-0, 8-0, and 6-0 – these are the scores that Wisła BF players have recorded in their last three matches against teams from Zabrze, Bielsko, and Poznań. After the final whistle against Warta BF, the stadium at Plac Na Groblach 23 was enveloped in blue and red smoke, champagne corks flew into the sky, and players and staff, wearing commemorative T-shirts, began celebrating together.
"This is something no one has ever achieved before, and no one will ever achieve again. Our team became a historic league champion in their debut season. It's a feeling that's impossible to describe, and although we've known for some time that the title would be ours, the joy of winning it is still incredible. Congratulations to the entire team," says Rafał Kurlit.
Wisła BF marked the final chapter of the PGF Blind Football League season with a significant number of goals scored in all three matches. A total of 26 goals were scored – Wisła's team scored a staggering 51 goals throughout the season, while conceding zero goals. The complete set of victories earned them 24 points.
Neither Tomek nor I had much work to do on the line. This was due to our incredible determination and tight defensive play, which we, of course, helped by navigating. This situation didn't really bother us, and at the same time, there's no better position on the pitch to observe our strikers' exploits. The guys joked that maybe it was time to go to the "intermediary" and look for a job," says goalkeeper Krzysztof Bednarkiewicz.
The championship cup and gold medals weren't the only awards our players received – they also won individual prizes. Martin Jung was the tournament's top scorer, scoring an incredible 26 goals. Paweł Zinkow received the MVP award for the first season, scoring a total of 14 goals. His goals in both matches against Śląsk Wrocław BF (second place in the league) were crucial to the outcome of these crucial clashes – Paweł was also named Wisła BF's best player. The award for the best youth player in the PGF Blind Football League went to Gabriel Olech (17), who capped his solid performances with six goals this season.
A good team needs standout players in its ranks. The tournament just concluded demonstrated the strength of the collective, but also the strength of individuals. As captain, I'm very proud that Martin, Paweł, and Gabi will be able to display proof of their incredible skills and achievements on shelves in their homes. It's a great feeling to applaud your teammates as they appear on stage one by one to receive their awards. Bravo, that's a wonderful achievement," commented Marcin Ryszka.
While league success requires a grand celebration, there's no time for merrymaking, as new challenges loom on the horizon, with the Polish Cup at the forefront. This year's edition will be held in Krakow and will be another opportunity to make history on home soil. Wisła BF will also travel to Prague and Leipzig for further international experience.
We had a weekend of fun, and now we're back to work. It would be a shame to get carried away by this success when we can add to our trophy collection and achieve something fantastic again by the end of the year. I feel the entire team is incredibly excited about what happened on Saturday – we're all extra motivated, but there's also an element of pressure, as more is expected of the best. I believe this is just the beginning of good things to come this half-year," adds Mateusz Krzyszkowski.
As we look to the challenges ahead, we'd like to thank everyone who joined us in the final round of league play and who also cheered us on during the first two games of the season. The support of our partners and fans is what gives us wings and allows us to share our passion far beyond the pitch of the stadium at Plac Na Groblach 23. Thank you, and we hope you'll show us your strength again soon!
