Mariusz Jop after #WISZNIA: We gave them this goal
Wisła Kraków's coach summed up the draw with Znicz Pruszków. The White Star lost two points after a late error. The White Star coach emphasized that the team created numerous chances and controlled the match, but a lack of effectiveness and defensive errors cost Wisła the victory.
"There's definitely a lot of disappointment and anger, especially about the situation in which we conceded the goal. If we look at the statistics, if we look at the whole match, the opponent didn't actually create any chances; we just gifted them the goal. On the other hand, we had a lot of those chances; we could have closed the match earlier because we were dangerous after the opening moments. We had a few nice one- or two-touch plays, multi-passes. I think the flow of the game was better in that regard. However, as I said, I absolutely treat it as a loss of two points, and there's a lot of bitterness after that match ," began Wisła Kraków coach Mariusz Jop.
At the end of the match, there was confusion in the penalty area and Znicz equalized to 1-1.
"It's a simple individual error, so in terms of strategy, way of playing, building plays from the back. I think the philosophy we've had from the very beginning is the right one. However, of course, later on, there are decisions on the field and the players' assessment of the situation. It's difficult for us to play long passes from five meters all the time. I don't think that's our style, that's not our way of playing. Of course, just like in friendly matches, it's an opportunity to practice certain things and take more risks. Because that's what friendly matches are for, that's what training is for. However, in competitive matches, there needs to be more responsibility with the ball. I think this is quite obvious, and as for the philosophy itself, as I said, I don't think it needs to be changed. Of course, decisions with the ball are the most important here ," the White Star coach summarized.
Is it worth the risk of playing from the goal? Or are other means better?
"Of course, now we can say that yes, that's what should have been done. However, several times, building from the back, we created opportunities up front, and we were already ahead in the second half. Because a few of those moments were also good. After the fact, I know it's easy to say that we should have just played long passes from a certain point on, and come out, just like we did after conceding a goal ," coach Jop replied to the question .
Weaker first half.
"I think we lacked a bit of patience in the first half, because the opponent was rather passive in their 5-4-1 formation. We wanted to move from the build-up phase to the finishing phase a bit too quickly. We lacked a bit more patience, a change of ends, because the opponent's behavior was a bit different after the change of ends. We wanted to capitalize on that. That was the element I focused on most during the break: to simply be patient and force the opponent to run without the ball, to change ends, in order to create an advantage after the change of ends, because there was such an advantage, such an opportunity to create an advantage ," he concluded.
A few words about the changes introduced.
"It's a different story. In Marc Carbo's case , that yellow card was decisive. We didn't want to take any risks in a match where such a nuance could affect the result. And in Krzyżanowski's case, he was unwell, so we made the decision to bring on Julian, who had been looking good in training, waiting for his chance. I think today's first 45 minutes can be considered absolutely successful. A nice chance, from which we scored a goal. He was the one who created it, so it was a good start ," he said.
The plan for the next week before the match against Śląsk Wrocław.
"First and foremost, we want to rest after this match, both physically and mentally. We'll do everything we can to prepare well for Saturday. We know the implications; there's a lot of talk about this match in various contexts. Śląsk have certainly seized the right moment. They've started to be effective, they've started to score all the points. But we're going there to win ," he argued.
A mistake in defense and Wisła concedes a goal.
"I think it's natural that after a match, after an individual mistake, a player needs some time to deal with it on his own. There will be time to talk. For now, we need to give the player some time to think about what caused it. There will be time to talk later and help him, because we are a team and we win as a team, we lose as a team. That's how it will always be. Anyone who makes a mistake will have support from the rest of the group and the coaching staff. It will be the same in this case ," he concluded.
Marc Carbo was shown a yellow card early on. Was there any concern he might pick up a second one?
"Marc made it to halftime. It's always difficult for a player who plays in the No. 6 position. He's also responsible for that difficult moment, which is the transition phase before attacking the defense. He has to be aggressive there, he has to break up those attacks. It's always a risk. However, Marc is also an experienced player and knew he had to be very careful. He made it to halftime, and the substitution we planned was implemented ," concluded coach Mariusz Jop .
