A page from the Wisła calendar: a draw with Standard Liège

Twelve years ago – on February 23, 2012 – Wisła Kraków drew 0-0 with Standard Liège in the Europa League Round of 32. This was the White Star's last match in European competition.

The 2011/12 season saw Wisła Kraków's European adventure lasting an exceptionally long and eventful period. After winning the Polish championship, the White Star looked to force their way into the coveted Champions League, and they surged through the qualifying rounds with aplomb. Wisła won five consecutive matches, defeating the champions of Latvia, Bulgaria, and Cyprus. However, Robert Maaskant's side suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the return match against APOEL Nicosia. Despite their superior opponents, Wisła were only a few minutes away from maintaining their lead. The 3-1 defeat ended any hopes of competing in the elite. The White Star was expected to continue their run in the Europa League group stage.

Wisła advanced from the group in extraordinary circumstances. The Kraków team suffered heavy defeats against each of their three opponents (1-3 to Odense, 1-4 to Twente, 1-4 to Fulham), but also achieved narrow victories (1-0 to Fulham, 2-1 to Odense, 2-1 to Twente). An exceptionally favorable set of other results gave Wisła second place in the group. As a reminder, the decisive goal was a stoppage-time goal in the Fulham-Odense match – scored after Wisła's match against Twente had already ended. The fans and players at Reymonta 22 were in disbelief when they received the news from London, but surprise quickly turned into a veritable outburst of joy!

In the round of 32, Wisła faced Belgian side Standard Liège and played them two tough matches. The red cards certainly didn't make the game any easier. In the match in Kraków, Michał Czekaj was sent off after 26 minutes, and in the return match, Gervasio Núñez had to be substituted in the 63rd minute. Despite playing with a shorthanded team, Wisła managed to equalize late in the first leg (Cvetan Genkov scored to make it 1-1), and held on to a goalless draw in the second. This wasn't enough to secure promotion – Standard secured promotion thanks to a higher number of away goals – but Wisła put in a respectable performance on the European stage.

The rematch with Standard on February 23, 2012 was Wisła's last match in European cups so far.
