Blind Football: The Polish Cup Final Returns to Krakow
On October 12-13, Krakow will once again become the capital of Polish blind football in its club version, as the 7th edition of the Polish Blind Football Cup will be held at Wawel Castle. Wisła BF will be among the competitors, with a chance to win their fifth gold medal.
Last Friday, the draw for the Polish Cup group stage took place, with six teams participating. A newly formed team from Warsaw joined the familiar group of clubs competing in the recently concluded first season of the PGF Blind Football League. Wisła Kraków was placed in Group A, which, in addition to our section, included Warta Poznań BF and Niezłomni BF Zabrze. Group B included teams from Wrocław, Bielsko, and the aforementioned Warsaw.
"We have the final step, or rather three steps, before the end of the club season. We're happy that the Cup is returning to Krakow – we're also very hopeful that the trophy itself will stay here. Everything depends on us; in our group we have rivals we easily beat during the league season. However, we must remember that the fight for this trophy has its own rules, and there's no room for mistakes," said Marcin Pajor.
The tournament's group stage will be played on Saturday. At 9:30 a.m., Wisła will host the bronze medalists from the league and the 2023 Polish Cup, Warta BF. At 1:30 p.m., they will play the team from Zabrze, who finished last in the league.
On Sunday, the knockout stage will take place, in which teams from groups A and B will play for individual places – the first-place teams for gold, the second-place teams for bronze, and the teams that finish third in the group will compete for fifth place in the overall competition.
"As Marcin said, there's no room or time for mistakes. We respect our opponents, but we know what we're doing here and what we want to achieve. We've had a successful league season, a very successful international tournament in Prague, and there's another title to win. I'm sure the players will do everything in their power to keep the cup in Krakow," added Marek Żychowski, physiotherapist.
Dominik Foryś's team has a chance to win the Polish Cup for the fifth time. This tournament is the oldest in Poland. The first edition took place in 2017, before the Kraków section played under the aegis of the White Star. A victory would cap a successful season on the domestic stage, making 2024 even more historic for Wisła BF.
"It's not just our dream, it's our goal. We're training as hard as we can, we've played a lot of matches over the past month, and we know what we're capable of. However, we also know that other teams feel the same way – just like in classic football, this is theoretically the easiest trophy to win. You have to play three good matches and win them. Everything will be decided this weekend," concluded Marcin Ryszka.
For Biała Gwiazda BF, the rapidly approaching Polish Cup will be the club's last event of the year. For organizational reasons, our players and staff were forced to withdraw from the tournament scheduled for the end of this month in Leipzig.
We encourage you to follow Wisła BF on social media, where you can find more information about the upcoming 2024 Polish Cup. We can only keep our fingers crossed and wish them luck during this prestigious tournament!
