Amp Futbol: Simply the best!
2024 was an exceptionally successful year for Wisła Kraków's amphibious football section. The White Star demonstrated its strong form on the domestic stage and achieved its best-ever result in the Champions League. Furthermore, the players from Wawel Castle contributed significantly to the national team's strong performance. Time to sum it up!
The best in Poland...
Wisła Kraków kicked off the 2024 league season in Wrocław, facing Stal Rzeszów. The White Star demonstrated their excellent form in this match, winning 5-0. They also continued to perform well in their subsequent matches in the PZU Amp Futbol Ekstraklasa, securing full points after victories over Pokrová Lviv and Śląsk Wrocław.
The Kraków team had an even better start in Boguchwała. There, the Polish Champions defeated Radomiak Radom 7-0 in their opening match. Without a doubt, the toughest match was against TSP Podbeskidzie Kuloodporni Bielsko-Biała. It was unclear until the final whistle which team would take all three points, but ultimately, the R22 team prevailed. Wisła won 2-1 with goals from Kamil Grygiel and Kamil Rośek. The match was significant because the victory left the team from Małopolska as the sole leader of the competition.
The Kraków team fought valiantly in each match to finish in first place. The White Star's goal for this campaign – as the players emphasized – was to defend their championship title. They ultimately achieved this feat in Poznań during the sixth league tournament. Although the tournament didn't quite start as the players would have liked, with the White Star "only" drawing with Śląsk Wrocław, they proved their worth in subsequent matches, winning against Podbeskidzie and Warta Poznań, thus clinching their place in the domestic competition.
Historic success
The football section of Wisła Kraków also won the previous season's championship. This allowed the White Star to showcase their skills in the Champions League. The team from Wawel Castle's main goal was to triumph in the competition, but the task proved extremely demanding. In their first match, Wisła faced Turkish side Sahinbey, a team considered the favorite to win the title. Wisła's incredible fighting spirit and determination ensured they secured all three points. This boosted the team from the capital of Małopolska, which performed admirably in each subsequent match. In the group stage, the Kraków team won all their matches, then outlasted Italian side Vicenza with a 4-1 victory.
The absence of a Turkish team in the final was a major surprise, but CD Flamencos Amputados Sur, whom Wisła Kraków faced, were also a formidable opponent. Przemysław Świercz scored first to make it 1-0, but the opposition equalized in the closing stages. Just when it seemed the match would end with that score, the game was over. In the 48th minute, David Mendes found the net, and Wisła Kraków could celebrate a historic victory, becoming the first non-Turkish team to win the Champions League!
Representation
2024 also marks the start of a competition for the Polish national team. In early June, the Polish men's team flew to Evian to compete in the European Championships. The men aimed to at least repeat their strong performance from previous tournaments, and they succeeded, defeating England 1-0 in the bronze medal match. It's worth noting that this result was achieved with significant support from the White Star players.
The women's team also won the same medal. The Polish women's amphibious football team performed very well at the premiere World Championships held in Barranquilla, Colombia. In the bronze medal match, the Polish national team defeated Kenya 1-0. It's worth noting that Weronika Nowotny and Justyna Bzdela, who normally play for Wisła Kraków, are among the team's most reliable players.
See you on the pitches in 2025!
