Wisła and Ruch join forces! A unique walk with a historical backdrop
On Saturday, Wisła defeated Ruch Chorzów 5-0 in front of over 53,000 spectators. But the excitement wasn't limited to the stands and the pitch. Before the match, a group of White Star fans took part in a unique event: a walk through the history of Wisła and Ruch!
The Wisła History Association has organized historical walks several times, but all previous editions have taken place in Krakow and included locations such as Oleandry, Błonia, and Jordan Park. This time, thanks to cooperation with the Ruch History Association, Wisła fans could take part in an "away" walk and learn more about the history of the Chorzów "Blues." Nearly 50 people participated in the trip, setting off for Silesia early in the morning. In Chorzów, the group was met by Grzegorz Joszko, president of the Ruch History Association and Chorzów City Councilor, who guided the Wisła fans through places connected with the history of Chorzów football. Among other places, the Wisła fans visited the site where Ruch Sports Club was founded in 1920, the club's first headquarters, the former pitches at "Hasiok" and the market square, and the family home of Ruch's outstanding pre-war winger, Gerard Wodarz. The tour concluded at the stadium on Cicha Street. Grzegorz Joszko shared his extensive knowledge of the history of the Movement and presented it in a very interesting way against the background of the local history of Chorzów and Hajduk Wielki.
"We found the visit to the former Ruch pitch particularly interesting. There's no trace of that stadium left, but the surrounding buildings haven't changed, and thanks to historical photographs, we were able to pinpoint the exact spot where Wisła also played its matches against Ruch in the 1930s," reports Michał Gelata from the Wisła History Association.
"This is a special initiative and an exceptional event, allowing us to expand our existing activities into new areas. We are very grateful to Historia Ruchu for their hospitality and in the future we will gladly repay the Chorzów fans with similar visits to places connected with the history of Kraków football. It is also worth highlighting the excellent organization of the trip by the Kul-Tur Foundation, responsible for logistics and transport. We are convinced that it was a wonderful experience for the participants, and the Champions Match was a beautiful culmination of this day full of historical attractions," summarizes Jakub Zalotyński, Vice President of the Historia Wisły Association.
The historic trip to Chorzów is just the beginning of exciting initiatives planned by the Vistula History Association in 2025. Details of subsequent events will be available on the Association's social media profiles.
