Letkiewicz: Debut is an honor
In Friday's match against Odra Opole, debutant Patryk Letkiewicz defended Wisła's goal. The young goalkeeper kept a clean sheet, and his team won 5-0.
"The most important thing is that we won the match and finally broke through. A 5-0 win isn't some random result, and I think it was definitely thanks to the fans," he began. "As for the debut itself, I'm not sure if I wouldn't have preferred a little more work to showcase my skills. I fought for this team and this place in the starting eleven. And I sacrificed a lot, so I think it's a small negative in the overall picture. The most important thing is that we played a clean sheet, and that was mainly due to our efficient defense and good communication. I didn't have as much work, but I'm sure I'll be able to show my skills in the upcoming matches," he added.
When did the young goalkeeper get the news that he was going to make his debut? "There was a constant rivalry between us. The coach can't tell me two weeks in advance that I'll be playing. I have to keep fighting for it, and I found out I was playing on matchday. Of course, I was already expecting more, and I saw my position in the locker room growing and I was getting closer to that starting spot, but I think that's also a good thing, because it constantly motivates me and reminds me that I have to work. Even though I got my chance, it's unknown if I'll get it in the next match. I have to prepare just as thoroughly," Letkiewicz noted.
Despite the rivalry between the goalkeepers, there's a good atmosphere, and Letkiewicz receives support from his senior teammates. "This support wasn't just on matchday, it's constant, and I think we have a very high-level goalkeeping atmosphere, which is certainly encouraging. I don't feel that pressure, and I've always tried to encourage Anton whenever he's playing, and he gives me the same. So I'm glad it's such a healthy competition, and we have a very good atmosphere in the locker room," he said.
There was also the question of whether this debut was one of the young player's dreams: "It was definitely a dream since childhood, but also a goal throughout my career. Because the debut itself is an honor. I'm glad I got the chance in such a club and at such an age, but above all, it's a step towards achieving the highest possible goals, the best possible results. And most importantly, getting back to the Ekstraklasa, because that's what everyone is fighting for," he concluded.
