Michał Bierzało is returning to the pitch after a year-long break due to a serious illness. After signing a new contract with Wisła Kraków, he shared his reflections on these difficult times, community support, and his plans for the future.

– Michał, a year ago you returned to Wisła after 10 years, but the last year was extremely difficult for you… How did you survive it all?

"I returned to Wisła after a decade, and this return was very important to me. Wisła is the club where I grew up from the age of 8 to 19. I always dreamed of returning and ending my football journey here. Unfortunately, a year ago I was diagnosed with a brain tumor, which completely changed my daily life. I spent that time off the pitch fighting for my health. But now the doctor has given me the green light, I have signed a new contract, and I can't wait to get back on the pitch."

– How important was the support of the fans, the club and your loved ones during this time?

"Honestly, I didn't expect so much support. When I saw the banners in the stands and read the messages from my teammates and fans, I felt like I wasn't alone. This was something bigger than just football. I appreciate it with all my heart and know that without this support and the presence of my family and friends, my story could have been completely different. They were my motivation not to give up and to keep fighting."

– Is football more than just a sport for you?

"Definitely. I've loved football since I was a child; it's been my passion since my first training session. Sport has always been close to me, but football is something of a calling. I hope I'll be able to play it professionally for a few more years."

– Where did you get the strength to fight the disease?

"That's a difficult question... I've wondered about it myself sometimes. Despite difficult circumstances, I've always had a positive energy in my head. I never had any breakdowns, even before or after surgery. There were good and bad moments, but I never doubted. I always believed that I would return to health and play football, and that gave me enormous determination."

– How did you cope with a year without playing?

"It was a huge challenge... For so many years, football was my everyday life, and suddenly everything disappeared. But I knew I could get it back, and I felt that the people around me believed in it too."

– What does representing Wisła mean to you?

"Looking at the stadium now, at the pitch, I know that returning here was my goal. This stadium is the dream of every young Wisła footballer. Now the next step lies ahead of me – playing for the first team. I've had this dream for over 20 years, and I believe it will come true."

– What's ahead of you now?

"I've received clearance from my doctor to return to training. July 7th is my first training session after a long break. I'm already counting down the days. Before then, I want to rest for a few days by the Polish seaside, recharge my batteries, and return to work full of energy."

– What role would you like to play in the team?

"I want to bring experience, calmness, and confidence to the pitch, especially in defense and playmaking. I hope to be a support to my younger teammates, and my story will show that even after such difficult experiences, you can return to what you love. That it's worth fighting for, because obstacles can be overcome."

– What are you looking forward to most?

"For a league match. Friendly matches are fun, but playing for points is a completely different level. It puts the players in a completely different mood, and I can't wait."

– What would you like to say to people who may be going through difficult times?

"I would like to thank everyone who supported me: the fans, the club, my family, and friends. My story is proof that you can't give up. You have to keep moving forward, fight for your dreams, and never lose hope."
