Goalless start: Wisła Kraków - Polonia Warsaw 0:0
Wisła Kraków faced Polonia Warsaw at home in the second round of the Betclic 1st League. The match ended in a goalless draw despite numerous chances on both sides.
The visitors started the match with more momentum, maintaining control of the game in Wisła's half for the first few minutes. However, the hosts soon regained their rhythm and resumed their attacking play, while Polonia shifted to a deeper defensive position, focusing on quick counterattacks.
The match, played in torrential weather, initially lacked excitement. In the 23rd minute, Sukiennicki had a prime opportunity to shoot on goal, but his shot went well over the crossbar. Wisła remained the undisputed dominant side, unfortunately failing to deliver any significant change in the scoreboard.
Despite this, Warsaw came closest to scoring in the 36th minute. During a two-man play, Durmus received a good through ball. However, the Turkish winger overshot his shot, falling on the muddy pitch. On the White Star's side, Rodado and Sapała attempted long-range shots, unfortunately both of them missing the target. A somewhat disappointing half soon ended, and we awaited the second 45 minutes with hope.
Fight to break through
Coach Kazimierz Moskal brought Łukasz Zwoliński on after the break, aiming to bolster his team's attacking firepower. However, just like at the start of the match, the players in black were more effective in attack after the change of ends. In the 50th minute, after a skillful exchange of passes, Terpiłowski came face-to-face with Chichkan, shooting straight at the Belarusian's gloves. The visitors' relinquishment of the initiative in this regard ultimately paid off. In the 57th minute, Wiktor Biedrzycki, a well-played defender, was the last to be fouled, earning a red card. Our opponents also won a potentially dangerous free kick, but his shot found the crossbar.
Despite playing with a man down, the contest at the R22 remained relatively open. Wisła Kraków constructed promising opportunities, which were often thwarted with considerable dedication by our opponents. Attacking attacks against the opposing goal, faced with a 10-man squad, naturally posed a certain risk. The visiting coach, eager to capitalize on the opening spaces, made three substitutions, bringing on players from the bench.
In the 83rd minute, the White Star found themselves on the counterattack. Zwoliński, brought on for the second half, could have scored his first goal for the blue, white, and red. However, his close-range shot was too soft and posed no problem for Polonia goalkeeper Mateusz Kuchta.
Tomasz Wajda, the referee, added at least five minutes to regulation time. Jaroch, who was joining the attack, was fouled on the right wing, and Gogół, who had arrived earlier, was supposed to take the set piece. Angel Rodado, however, jumped in for the powerful free kick. The Spaniard could have clinched the victory, but his header was brilliantly saved by the Black Shirts goalkeeper. This was the final touch of the match. Neither side found a way to break through in front of the opposing goal, resulting in a draw.
